![]() ![]() After about three or four meetings, he could finally draw stuff using the pen! Mission accomplished. P what I had built and spent a few lunches with him getting stuff sent up. ![]() But I didn't put that in because I wanted to show the battery holder and I don't know how to draw translucent duct tape :(Īnyway, back in class, I showed Mr. There should have been duct tape around the battery pack at the back. However, I have given my best shot at editing a picture (Photoshopping as it's called, but I used GIMP) that looks like the real thing. So I don't really have a picture of the final product. Now unfortunately nobody in 2007 had a camera, including me. I took things slowly (expected with a burning hot rod in my hands.) and finished the job within the hour. I convinced my dad to drive me to the nearest RadioShack, where I picked up a soldering iron set and all the required parts for about $10. This was the plan for wiring up the whole thing. I would take an old marker and remove the ink cartridge and tip, and in its place put wires, a big battery pack, an IR LED, and a push-button switch. The end goal was to build something like this. When the IR emitter is activated, the Wiimote tells the computer over Bluetooth where it saw the IR light, and the software will then use that data to move the mouse. Connecting a Wiimote and saving it as wm to use later is now as simple as simultaneously pressing 1 + 2 on your Wiimote to make it discoverable then running: wm cwiid.Wiimote () This is however liable to fail a few times and not estabalish a connection but. In this case, the Wiimote will be tracking our homemade IR emitter. To be able to use the Wiimote we have to import the necessary library so: import cwiid. If you had a Wii, remember that gray/black flat thing you had to plug in to the Wii? That's the IR emitter, and the Wiimotes track that source of IR. The sensor at the head of the Wiimote is actually an IR sensor. The way it works is that the Wiimote connects to the computer through Bluetooth. The Wiimote Whiteboard, however, costs around $40 for the Wiimote and the raw materials for the IR emitter (assuming you have a laptop and projector). The problem is that a Smartboard costs thousands of dollars. One of those tangents had to do with Johnny Lee's Wiimote Whiteboard, a cheap way of getting Smartboard-like capabilities with just a Wiimote, a laptop, and a homemade IR emitter.Ī Smartboard is like a projector onto a special board which has special tools so you can use marker-like equipment to draw things on the Smartboard. Perkowski liked to go off on tangents during class. ![]()

Two groups of students with and without chemistry background participated in a user study. We applied differentiated instruction to study the learning effectiveness of users under different learning intensities. We report the essential ideas for building the system. Our system implements a complete titration process and provides assistance tools for learning and operating virtual items. ![]() Users wear a head‐mounted display and use their bare hands to interact with virtual objects to perform a titration experiment. We develop a virtual reality chemistry lab and use leap motion to detect users' hand gestures for operations. This paper studies users' learning perception in a virtual titration experiment with differentiated instruction. Questionnaire survey results also indicate that TIPTAB offers a good learning experience. Based on the cognitive load theory and the statistical data, TIPTAB has a low cognitive load for students during virtual experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more efficient compared with other representative interaction methods. During experimental learning, students can interact without wearing any devices as they do in real experiments, which greatly reduces their interaction burdens. An infrared (IR) camera and an IR transmitter are used to detect finger touch operations on the tabletop. Both object textures and scene contents are augmented by projectors, and thus the virtual presentation of digital space is seamlessly registered and fused with physical space. The tracked 3D poses are then used as inputs for further experiments. These objects are printed by three‐dimensional (3D) printers in advance and tracked in real‐time. A depth camera is used to detect tangible objects in the real environment. TIPTAB, a tangible interactive projection tabletop, is proposed for virtual experiments. The objective of the research is to reduce the interactive operation difference between virtual and real experiments as much as possible. Such a difference causes unfamiliarity and induces unnecessary cognitive load and inefficiency during learning. A visible difference between virtual and real experiments is the interaction mode. Virtual experiments are a new way of doing experiments. The introduction of game elements into the process of virtual and real fusion experiments stimulates students’ interest in and enthusiasm for learning. At the same time, the interaction between the real experimental equipment and the virtual experimental scene greatly improves the user’s sense of reality and operation. The experimental results show that this method improves the efficiency of human–computer interaction and reduces the user’s operating load. ![]() This method proposes a multimodal intention active understanding algorithm to improve the efficiency of human–computer interaction and user experience and proposes a novel game-based virtual–real fusion intelligent experimental mode that adds gameplay to the process of virtual–real fusion experiments. ![]() GVRFL uses virtual and real fusion methods to interactively complete chemical experiments, which greatly improves the user’s sense of reality and operation. Therefore, this paper designs a multimodal perception gameplay virtual and real fusion intelligence laboratory (GVRFL). However, in the existing virtual experiments, there are problems such as low human–computer interaction efficiency, poor user sense of reality and operation, and a boring experimental process. Chemistry experiments are an important part of chemistry learning, and the development and application of virtual experiments have greatly enriched experimental teaching. ![]() ![]() ![]() 18 letter, Waxman commented on the Safe Drinking Water Act exemption: “Many dubbed this provision the ‘Halliburton loophole’ because of Halliburton’s ties to then-Vice President Cheney and its role as one of the largest providers of hydraulic fracturing services.” Before he was vice president, Dick Cheney was the CEO of Halliburton. California Congressman Henry Waxman, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has just announced an investigation into the composition of the proprietary chemicals used in fracking. Drillers do not have to reveal the chemical cocktail, thanks to a slew of exemptions given to the industry, most notably in the 2005 Energy Policy Act, which actually granted the fracking industry a specific exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act. Each well requires between 1 million and 7 million gallons of the fluid every time gas is extracted. The high-pressure liquids are a combination of water, sand and a secret mix of chemicals. To force open the fractures, millions of gallons of liquid are forced into the shaft at very high pressure. Explosive charges are then set off at various points in the drill shaft, causing what Fox calls “mini-earthquakes.” These fractures spread underground, allowing the gas to flow back into the shaft to be extracted. Companies like Halliburton drill down vertically, then send the shaft horizontally, crossing many small, trapped veins of gas and oil. The source of the flammable water, and the subject of “Gasland,” is the mining process called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.”įracking is used to access natural gas and oil reserves buried thousands of feet below the ground. After a few seconds, a ball of fire erupts out of the sink, almost enveloping Markham’s head. ![]() Director Josh Fox films Markham as he runs his kitchen faucet, holding a cigarette lighter up to the running water. Mike Markham of Colorado has an explosive problem: His tap water catches fire. Here is Amy Goodman’s column which I read in Saturday morning’s paper, “Cracking Down on Fracking”: But drillers have now learned how to tap into the shale deposits and extract the gas – but as you’ll see from the rest of the post, there is a considerable cost. Until recently, natural gas has not been economically viable, because it was locked in shale formations under ground. Natural gas emits half the carbon dioxide of coal, per unit of energy. ![]() My eyes were opened and I want to share!Īlmost everybody agrees that if we’re going to curb our greenhouse gas emissions we have to find alternatives for the coal that fuels almost half the nation’s electricity. So those who continue touting fracked gas as a bridge to a low-carbon future are not keeping up with the latest science. This week I’m digressing just a bit from textiles, because I just read Amy Goodman’s column about what the search for natural gas and oil is doing to us. In fact, “natural gas could warm the planet as much as coal in the short term,” one major 24-author study from June concluded. Yet countless studies show that because the fracking process leaks so much methane - a highly potent greenhouse gas - fracked gas isn’t a climate solution. The study also points out that the world has seen “r apidly diminishing global water resources due to population growth and climate change.” Therefore, even though other forms of energy have a higher intensity of water use, “the permanent loss of water use for hydraulic fracturing from the hydrosphere” may still be higher. E ither the water doesn’t escape the shale formation or, when it does come back to the surface, it “is highly saline, is difficult to treat, and is often disposed through deep injection wells.” One key point the study makes is that, unlike other energy sources, much of the water fracking uses is essentially lost to humanity. Some of the biggest fracking sites - like the Permian and Eagle Ford Basins - are in highly water stressed areas. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Href=”″ > How to Give Effective Employee Feedback In fact, when the right feedback is given at the right time, it can have incredibly positive long-term effects on employee performance, job satisfaction, and your overall business outcomes.īut before you can reap the rewards, it’s important to understand the key components of effective feedback.
